Bio
Gösta von Platen (b. 1991, Stockholm, Sweden) investigates relationships between materials, environments and bodies through a more-than-human approach. His speculative practice builds on an expansive understanding of our physical realm as tangible yet continuously fluctuating, where sensing becomes the primary means of interaction. His work takes shape through material making, painting and sculpture, often as portals or portable installations. Textile serves as both a conceptual and material framework, while posthumanism and phenomenology inform his investigation into how matter, perception and environments shape one another.
Gösta von Platen holds an MFA in Craft! from Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm. During his studies he conducted archival research at the Louvre Museum in Paris and completed a residency with Rejmyre Art Lab, supported by grants from Estrid Ericsson, Maria Edlinds Stiftelse and Konstfack. For his MFA graduation project Trembling Matter he received both the Vasakronan Scholarship and a Konstfack grant for his master's thesis. Trembling Matter assembled found materials and observations gathered from in-between spaces into temporary environments. Oil paint on an old coconut fibre rug, deadstock clothing from his grandparents' general store transformed into canvases, 3D printing beside felting, leaves balanced on turned wooden spikes or sewn together, all revealed a quiet chaos as matter unfolded through different states.
From 2019 to 2023, he worked as a menswear designer for LOEWE in Paris. Now, Gösta is been focusing on his own studio practice, mainly painting and installation, yet with a performative aspect. Born in Stockholm in 1991, Gösta moved in 2010 to Berlin to pursue his artistic ideas within both visual art and music. He graduated with a BA in fashion design, at ESMOD Berlin University of Art for Fashion in 2018. During his studies, he also gained experience at the Royal Academy of Art in Antwerp, in its fashion department, and through internships in Stockholm and London.
